Brazilian production and consumption of ethanol should increase by 150% by 2020, says a survey by the Sugar Cane Industry Union (UNICA - União da Indústria de Cana-de-Açúcar). According to the report, flex cars in the country will consume 50 billion liters of the bio fuel per year within ten years.
Ethanol production must keep up with this growth rhythm and reach 65.3 billion liters in 2020. The volume of sugar cane to be processed within this scenario goes beyond the 1 billion ton mark.
For the 2010/11 harvest, the union foresees an ethanol production of 27.4 billion liters, of which 25.2 billion will be destined to the internal market. Sugar cane production will be approximately 600 million tons ? a 10% increase with regards to the previous cycle.
